FAQs

Registration

  • Yes! BrUMO accepts teams of size 4-6. There will be one individual round and three team rounds.

  • Yes! We will put you on a team with other individuals at our own discretion. We do not give individuals the option to request other individuals to be a part of their team, even if they are from the same school/organization.

Note that individuals will need a chaperone to attend the competition.

  • Yes! We welcome students from all across the world to register.

  • Yes! This competition is open to any students who are in grade 12 or below, so advanced middle school students are welcome to participate.

  • If most of your students have participated in contests such as AMC 10/12, AIME, or HMMT, then you should choose Division A.

If most of your students have minimal high school math contest experience, then we recommend choosing Division B.

Email us at brumo@brown.edu if you are unsure.

  • No! We will not consider which division you apply for. However, we may choose to change your division as we see fit.

  • You may register as many teams of 4-6 as you wish, and they may be in different divisions. However, we cannot guarantee that all of your teams will be accepted due to capacity constraints.

  • Yes! We plan to run an online contest a week after the in-person contest. It will have the same problems as the in-person contest, but the results will not be published on our website.

Competition

  • This year, we plan to create two divisions for our contest. The A division will be of similar difficulty to last year’s contest; the B division will be significantly easier than last year’s contest and is intended for students who have minimal contest math experience.

Sample questions for Division A can be found in the archive. Sample questions for the B division can be found here.

  • No! On the individual round, teams of 4-6 will be scored by the average of their individual scores.

However, note that the average for the individual round is taken over 4 or more members, so teams of size less than 4 will have 0’s in place of missing members.

  • Division B will feature contest-style math questions that use school math concepts up to Algebra 2 and Geometry. In particular, no knowledge of Precalculus will be expected.

Cost, Housing & Transport

  • BrUMO does not charge for registration or participation! However, teams are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation costs.

  • Teams that are coming from far away will likely be staying at a hotel near Brown. Here is a list of hotels to consider!

For teams that are coming from close by (e.g. Massachusetts), they could just travel on the day of the competition.
